Am I Going To Heaven?

Am I Going to Heaven? It’s a question we all ask ourselves, or at least one that we should be asking ourselves. So why is it that it seems so few people think about this question? I have a chance to meet with lots of different people that live in the “Bible Belt”, and when I ask them if they are going to heaven. They almost always say yes. But then when I ask them why they are going to heaven? They usually don’t know. Sure they usually start off saying “because I believe in Jesus Christ”, so then I ask them if they think demons are going to heaven to? They say no obviously, but demons believe in Jesus Christ to, and they tremble at His name. So again I ask, why are you going to heaven? Then they usually appeal to the fact that they go to church and are involved in ministry. I then quote Matt 7:21-23 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws. So if Jesus was right, and I think He is, then there will be MANY who thought that because they called Jesus their Lord, and even were doing amazing ministry, they were going to be saved, but actually will go to Hell forever. At this point people start to realize that they don’t actually know why they are going to make it into heaven. To be clear I am not doubting their salvation, I’m just running them through a personal assessment like 2 Corinthians 13:5 tells us to do.

So how can we know? How can we be sure we are in the faith? If it’s not the size of our ministry, and if it’s not our belief in Jesus Christ, then what is it? I really believe that knowing what will determine our entry into heaven (or lack of entry) is not only helpful in a knowledge aspect, but more importantly it will change the way you live your life, and the way you pursue Jesus Christ. I believe the way we can know we are going to heaven is; if we have a genuine faith in Jesus Christ, which comes from knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of our lives. Galatians 2:16 Paul says 3 times that no one is made right with God by obeying the law, and he stresses the fact that it is only by faith in Jesus Christ that one can be made right with God. And in Matt 7:23 Jesus says “I never knew you” just before telling them to leave. This is a revolutionary concept. Jesus wants to know us, intimately. And a genuine faith can only come out of an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Do you know Jesus Christ? Do you have a relationship with Him? Or are you caught up in trying to make it look like you do? Are you caught up in trying to obey what you know the Bible says and missing out on getting to know Jesus Christ? Jesus wants more than to just save us from hell, He wants to know each one of us intimately, and He wants relationship. He wants us to experience His perfect love fully (1Jn 4:17-21 NLT). Take some time this week in your devotions and ask yourself: 1) Do I have a relationship with Jesus Christ? 2) Am I focused on growing that relationship as much as I am focused on trying to look like a really good Christian? 3) Ask Jesus to reveal to you His vision for your relationship with Him.
